Stranger Things fans have taken to social media to share their reactions to that major death in the Netflix series’ season 4 part 2 finale.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 4 part 2.

Fans of Stranger Things have taken to social media to share their reactions to that devastating death in season 4 volume II. The final, super-sized episodes of Stranger Things’ fourth season dropped on Netflix Friday, July 1, and they brought a handful of tearful moments. Matt and Ross Duffer teased Stranger Things’ season finale would feature some major deaths. So, it was clear not everyone would survive Vecna and the latest excursion into the Upside Down. Unfortunately, the Party’s newest member, Eddie “The Freak” Munson (Joseph Quinn), did not survive to see season 5.

After being introduced as the epitome of ’80s metal cliches in “Chapter One: The Hellfire Club,” Eddie swiftly began to resonate with audiences thanks to his viral scene with Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien). Having “just ran and left” Vecna’s first victim in his trailer, Eddie is hunted as a serial killer/satanic cult leader as he and Hawkins’ heroes hatch a plan to stop the Upside Down’s big bad. In volume II’s finale, “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback,” Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Steve (Joe Keery), and Robin (Maya Hawke) head to the Creel House in the Upside Down to kill Vecna while Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Eddie distracts his bat-like creatures. The latter draws them out by playing Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” atop his trailer. When they become overwhelmed and Dustin escapes back to Hawkins through the gate in Eddie’s trailer, the once cowardly misfit decides to sluggish for leaving Chrissy by sacrificing himself to the bats to buy his new friends more time. Fans are currently dealing with Stranger Things’ season 4 finale the only way they know how: on social media.

Fans have already binged through Stranger Things season 4’s final two episodes, which span 3 hours and 44 minutes, and they’ve shared their reactions on social media. Many of these reactions deal with the final moments of fan-favorite Eddie Munson. Check out some selected Twitter reactions below:

Following in the footsteps of Barb Holland (Shannon Purser) and Bob Newby (Sean Astin), Eddie is yet another Stranger Things character to be introduced and killed off in the same season, which arguably makes his death all the more devastating. Eddie will be remembered by the people of Hawkins as a murderer despite being innocent and going out as a hero. However, as Dustin tells Eddie’s uncle if they’d just”gotten to know him…really know him…they’ve would’ve really loved him.” While Eddie was an obvious target in Stranger Things’ season 4 finale, the impact of his death is a testament to how well the series writes and casts its characters.

Two of Stranger Things’ standouts in season 4, Eddie and Max (Sadie Sink), were hit the hardest in the finale. Although Sink’s character may not be technically dead, her body and mind are broken/empty following the “earthquake” that has ravaged Hawkins. The challenging ending has only exacerbated the curiosity and anticipation for Stranger Things’ fifth and final season. Whether the series’ final chapter lives up to expectations remains to be seen. Regardless, audiences won’t soon forget Eddie’s beautiful, intelligent, mysterious, hilarious, and horrific year—even though he never graduated high school.
