Nancy Pelosi supports Charlie Crist in the running for the governor of Florida
As the Democratic primary for Florida governor is heating up, United States Representative Charlie Crist announced on Monday the endorsement of one of the most prominent and controversial names in national politics: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“From his tireless work in Congress to his commitment to Floridians across the state, Charlie Crist has an unfathomable record of standing up for the people of the Sunshine State and delivering results that matter,” Pelosi said in a statement.
Crist has served three terms in Congress representing Florida’s 13th District. Previously, he was governor of Florida, as a Republican, from 2007 to 2011.
Crist is running in the Democratic government primary against Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried and state senator Annette Taddeo, D-Miami, his former running mate in 2014.
Everyone is vying to replace Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.
Crist said in a statement that the approval was an honor and that “Pelosi’s leadership raises the voices of all Floridians who are ready to leave behind divisive and inflammatory rhetoric and really work for the people.”
In 2018, Crist backed Pelosi in his run for the House speaker.
Crist has led the group among Democrats when it comes to fundraising, but is far behind DeSantis and his available campaign funds. The Friends of Ron DeSantis action committee has more than $ 136 million available in April. Crist raised just over $ 8 million.
Although Pelosi is one of the Democratic Party’s biggest figures, she is often attacked by the right and the endorsement could give conservatives reason to be skeptical of Crist.
