Seems like forever since Marcel the shell with the shoes the feature film has been announced. Jenny Slate first announced in 2014 that she and Marcel La Conchiglia Co-creator Dean Fleischer-Camp was planning a film based on the three-part shorts that went viral on YouTube. Eight years later, we finally have a trailer for it.

The A24 movie is shot as a mockumentary, just like YouTube shorts, and so on reintroduces Marcello. In the trailer, Marcel (Slate) explains to Fleischer-Camp (who he is acting as a “documentarian”) that “it takes at least 20 bullets to have a community”. But he doesn’t have it; he instead lives alone with his grandmother, Nana Connie (Isabella Rossellini).

Marcel seems quite happy with Nana Connie’s company (them Spend their days watching 60 minutes) but he misses the other shells. “Sometimes I find my mind wandering … thinking, ‘What would my family think?’ Do you think they might be out there? “, she asks.

Marcel decides, encouraged by Nana Connie, that he embarks on an adventure in search of his family. But him first tries to seek help online, hosting a live stream asking if anyone has information about their lost loved ones. Eventually she sets out on a journey and the search for him manages to attract the attention of 60 minutes host Lesley Stahl, who ends up interviewing him.

In addition to Slate, Fleishcher-Camp and Rossellini, the film also features supporting roles of Rosa Salazar and Thomas Mann. As seen in the trailer, Conan O’Brien and Brian Williams also make cameos.

The film was written by Slate, Fleishman-Camp and Nick Paley and is directed by Fleishman-Camp. It first premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in 2021 and was also recently screened at SXSW. Its theatrical release is coming this summer on June 24th.
