Close coordination between law enforcement allowed New Orleans police to arrest an armed murder suspect and seize seven guns amid tornado warnings Wednesday without a single shot being fired.

Tyrone Steele, 18, is suspected in two homicide investigations: a triple homicide on March 21 in Gentilly and a shooting in which the victim was found on March 28 in a canal near Morrison and Gannon streets, the superintendent said Monday. police officer Shaun Ferguson at a press conference. Steele was also cautioned with aggravated criminal harm in a February 27 shooting at 3800 St. Bernard Avenue.

Steele faces four counts of first degree murder, one aggravated burglary count and one conspiracy count to commit aggravated burglary. Bond has not yet been fixed for these charges.

Steele was arrested in May 2020 in connection with a murder, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said, but there was not enough information for a grand jury indictment. If convicted of first degree murder, Steele could receive the death penalty or a mandatory life sentence.

The “hard and smart work” and “strong and necessary collaboration” between the New Orleans police and the district attorney allowed the NOPD, the Louisiana State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms to “surgically remove. .. one of the most violent criminals in New Orleans, “Williams said.

This much-lauded teamwork comes just months after Williams and Ferguson tried to blame each other and their agencies for the recent spate of violent crime. In February, the two said they had put aside their feud and worked together to revive a multi-agency gang unit to get dangerous criminals off the streets.

These guns were seized during a SWAT roll that led to Tyrone Steele’s arrest on Wednesday, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson announced during a press conference at the NOPD headquarters in New Orleans on Monday, April 4.

On Wednesday morning, a special grand jury indicted Steele in connection with the murders. Later that evening, SWAT officers went looking for him on the 1800 block of Touro Street. Within half an hour, Steele, who was considered armed and dangerous, had surrendered, along with seven other people who were at the 7th ward residence at the time. No one was injured and no shots were fired. Police did not say how many of the arrested people remain in custody.

An independent investigation revealed that Steele was linked to two murder investigations.

“We are confident that we will be able to link these people to further violent crimes in the near future,” Ferguson said.

The chief admitted there is still a lot of work to be done and asked community members about the crimes to call investigators at (504) 658-5300.

According to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, at least 71 people were killed in New Orleans this year – a 122% increase over the same period in 2019 and a 48% increase over last year.

“No district attorney has faced a workload like the one we are dealing with now. … People are exhausted from the senseless violence taking place in our community,” Williams said. “Through this indictment and the subsequent arrest by the NOPD, I hope the people of Gentilly and New Orleans understand that we listen to you.

“We hear you and we are recovering from this wave of violent crime that we are seeing in this city and in our country.”
